Interesting Facts

Situated on the Great North Road (more commonly known as the A1) Archway has a rich history and a lot to shout about.
Archway is home to the very spot where Dick Whittington was drawn back to the city of London as he heard the Bow Bells of London ringing out! Believing they were sending him a message, he returned to London embarking of a series of adventures, becoming prosperous and later going on to be the Lord Mayor of London on three occasions. The spot at which Dick turned back is marked by a statue of his famous feline companion.

Other little gems of knowledge include the fact that the first cable car, built in Europe ran through Archway passing up Highgate Hill to Highgate village. Archway is also proud to be the home of St John’s Church which was designed by Charles Barry, whilst you may not know his name you will definitely be familiar with his work as he also the architect for one of the most famous buildings in England if not the world, the Houses of Parliament in Westminster!

In more recent times the notorious graffiti artist ‘Banksy’ has staked claim to the area, sharing his talent (depending on your views)! The hitch hiker to ‘Anywhere’ stands at the foot of Highgate hill, opposite McDonalds. Archway has a rich music history with the area mentioned in songs by the likes of The Boo Radleys (Blue Room in Archway), the home of Rod Stewart when he was younger and appearing on the cover of the The Kinks 1971 album ‘Muswell Hillbillies’.
